’Sangeet’ ‘ is formed by the combination of two words sam+geet. ‘Sam’ means complete in all respect or proper while ‘geet’ means to sing. . However it does not involve only singing. It includes instrumental music and dance as well. The following words from the great authority on music, Pt. Sarangadeva endorse this statement, thus ‘geetam vadyam tatha nrittam trayam sangeetamuchyate.
