  13. To quote INSIGHTS, “covering this initiative from October – 2015 to December – 2016 to do well in Mains – 2016”. So if I target Mains ’16, should I discontinue following this initiative from Jan’16? I’m new to competitive exams, so it does take me time to compile all the research into a good answer and by-heart it; hence, I can give more time towards optional and prelims as well as revise my answers from October to December! Please shed some light. Thanks!

This is enough to boost your confidence in Exam hall !!
Thanx Insights… Feeling confident this year !! To all aspirants I would request to follow it consistently & surely you would be far more SECURE than others…. Just a piece of advise…. Dont ignore your optional for the sake of General Studies!!

    2. Hello @disqus_Vw1bvZ7adH:disqus
Could u please explain some more about focussing on optional…

I am unable to start preparing for my optional, which is law, though I have studied it for last 5 years…
what should be the strategy to study for optional subject?

      1. U might first refer to some coaching’s notes for preliminary understanding of the requirements of upsc syllabus….. then refer standard books for studying the topics in depth mentioned in syllabus… then practice last year questions from the topics u have studied… ur preparation would be incomplete if u hv not practiced answer writing in optional as well !!
        Refer to link below :
        http://upsc.unacademy.in/upsc-preparation-law-optional-tips-by-sachin-sharma/

      1. I started from December end itself….I wrote answer for 2 or 3 questions & rest questions I would make online notes of !! But I made sure I had a look on every questions !!

        1. THANK YOU
YOU HAVE CLEARED A VERY BIG DOUBT OF MINE
I want to ask you whether you had joined any coaching classes
when did you start your preparation?
You were preparing full tym or part tym

            1. one more advice needed….do reply if you are available nowadays….m quite confused about what they say …buliding the gs foundation as a fresher ….but then is it okay relying on self preparation totally when you are a fresher ..my parents have been provoking me to join vajiram coz of the unnerving fame and the inevitable institute…..but my worry is that not js vajiram…shud i at all consider joining a foundation course…when my present status is just a healthy habit of reading the newspaper and just hving started with the ncerts……….wud be the best help if u cud reply soon…..m purely muddled

        2. Can you please help making a schedule throughout the day of how much time to devote for the following:-
          i) Studying NCERTs ( should notes be made at the time of 1st reading or during 2nd reading i.e revision time)
          ii) Studying Optional
          iii) Reading the Hindu
iv) Writing 2 or 3 questions from Insights Secure
          v) Making notes of the remaining questions from Articles
vi) Reading Daily Current affairs from Insights

Please help me out for I feel lost when so many things have to be done and being a complete fresher in this arena………Please don’t mind for asking your help in such details

      1. Hmm… Notes making is the essence of this preparation…. So here is a sample of how to make notes for current issues …
Today i.e 28th December insights secure has uploaded an article in Bussiness Standard for Real Estate bill …. first lets have a look at the article
        http://www.business-standard.com/article/opinion/debashis-basu-real-estate-bill-no-pressure-on-officials-115122700633_1.html

Since the article majorly refers to issues in real estate sector, not the provisions of the bill..so we need to refer another article from prs, here is the link
        http://www.prsindia.org/billtrack/the-real-estate-regulation-and-development-billi-2013-2861/

so first I would make notes of what are the issues in real estate sector, then how the provisions addresses these issues. Then, the loopholes in the bill & lastly the recommendations/ way forward for the issue concerned.
Here is how I would have made notes of this article :

        Issues in Real Sector :
        1. Unregulated Rental market
        2. Lack of qualifications for builders
        3. Flouting of norms during constructions
        4. Uneven economic development, haphazard town planning leading to migrant issues
        5. Corrupt nexus b/w politicians, bureaucrats and builders

        Provisions of the bill:
        1. To set up sate level Real Estate Regulatory Authorities for registration of real estate sector
        2. Online clearances for new projects
        3. Real Estate Appellate Tribunal for appeals from RERAs decision

        Issues in the Bill :
        1. ‘Land’ is in State list & the bill differs from several state laws
        2. Issues relating to finances not adequately addressed
        3. Bill not addresses issues of land acquisition, registration, taxation, lad titling approvals, etc.

        Recommendations :
        1. The bill should regulate commercial real estate as well
        2. Smaller projects needs to be covered
        3. All real estate agents must be required to be registered

We need not go into technical aspects of the bill as it is not required. Try making as crisp & short notes for better revision later.
Although these may not be the perfect notes, but I hope you would get an idea on how to approach the issue. Make online notes so u can edit them later if required.

        1. Thanks ……your valuable suggestions will required in future also
And will pray for ur success from Sadhguru

        2. Thank you. Your approach is helpful, but the example you gave is about Bill 2013, and question was for 2015 bill, which is not yet updated on the prs site.

        1. many toppers say that its better to have online notes (Evernote)
i also agree that we can search by pinnings, topicwise, save images etc easily, making easy for revision,
but i m finding highly inconvenient,
i make offline notes daily, no doubt, plz guide me if i should turn myself to online notes making?
i cover up offline with sticky notes and use loose paper to make notes..
but i still have doubt on same.
i can make a habit right now so to cover up till end. help.

          1. See in my first attempt, I made offline notes on papers, registers, copies, sticky notes, etc. My situation after 8 months of preparation was that I had 3 registers for Art & culture, 2 registers for Environment, 2 registers for Science & Tech., 3 files for Newspaper notes, 3 registers for Economy, 5 registers for optional, etc. etc. I couldn’t even revise them even once and failed in Prelims. It was not that I did’nt work hard that year but lack of organised notes costed me 1 year. If you make online notes,u wud have just 1 laptop/computer/ tab to handle and any & every note would be available at just a click. Plus you can take your notes with you if u r travelling. Plus you can easily edit them & make them short. Hence, online note making is very strongly recommended. Plz Dont take any chances. Inculcate a habit & u wud love it later !!

            1. how long does this conversion oh habit in note making take? is it advisable to start fresh online note making habit now in july ,if i am appearing for 2017 prelims ? it would be really helpful if u cud advice on the same …just like the immense help in the above queries

    3. can u tell me how much time u take to complete this exercise. i also thought of notes making, but each time it takes 3-4 hrs. so it creates doubts in mind.
could u pls tell ur strategy to minimize time required to complete secure questions.

      1. Yeah…it took me 3 hours initially …. but later through practice the time reduced to 2 hours… but more important in my opinion is to finish ncerts first, then finish ur optional topic by topic.. if these 2 tasks are completed then start referring insights secure mains for further reading.. If u skip this sequence…. it may do more harm than good !!

        1. So you suggest to complete ncerts and options and then come to Secure mains or is it good to do both parallely?

          1. Just to understand this sequence is the most difficult part of preparation … aspirants choose the wrong sequence & suffer later(personal experience)… It is most important to finish ncerts 1st… finishing ncerts would help u understand newspaper articles better… then comes optional. January to March is rightest time for ncerts & optionals… if without finishing ncerts & optionals u r investing 3 or 4 hours in insights, it may not be much beneficial enough. Finish optional u would be much relaxed, then focus on further reading of articles on Secure Mains…
I hope Insights administrator not blocks me for this advise !!

            1. Thank you for sharing your strategy.
Can I ask you to share your opinion on going through daily debates. Whether it should be after completion on NCERT and Optional or on daily basis.

              1. This is a big delimma …. The sequence is first finish ncerts, then optionals, then come for Secure Mains initiative. By the time u r completing ur ncert & optional follow only 1 newspaper i.e. The Hindu. Dont worry, if u r following The Hindu properly, u wud be covering the major issues & not losing anything. Actually its sucidal to read 3 newspapers without completing ur optional !!

              1. Study routine is a very subjective issue. I am a nocturnal as far as my study routine is concerned. So I dont think it might help u much.
But what I always have in mind is the target of the day!! I always made weekly plans and sub-divided it into daily plans. I never compromised with my target of the day, no matter what!! So I would recommend u to have weekly plans and make no compromises with completion of ur plans. N u will see improvements within a month. And slowly drop by drop, the ocean of Upsc would be accomodated !!

          1. But sadhguru UPSC ask questions from various sources.I have completed NCERT’s and revising it.But there are many questions which are very difficult to answer .ex.-parks,national heritage etc.

    4. it will be great to know how you managed both gs secure and optional because i am finding it hard to manage my optional with secure initiative as state prelims also approaching soon… please throw some light upon it.

      1. Yup … it would be a problem if u try managing optional & gs secure together … U’ll have to sacrifice one… I wud advise for completing optional first…till u r completing ur optional just read the Hindu only … once optional is complete then refer secure mains … dont worry, if u r following hindu, u wont miss any major issue !! Actually its sucidal to read 3 newspapers if ur optional is not complete !! (personal experience)

        1. thanks for reply. yes you are right i also thought of same thing if optional is not prepared it feels insecure keeps bugging in head.

    5. Iv started preparing for cse. I write 1-2 questions and save the rest in note. However,my ncerts are being completed at turtle’s pace, plus iv not started preparing for operational(Iam vouching on coaching for optional starting January).

      -Is it the right strategy?
-Can you tell from which month current affairs should be stressed on for answering mains questions?

      1. Just to understand this sequence is the most difficult part of preparation … aspirants choose the wrong sequence & suffer later(personal experience)… It is most important to finish ncerts 1st… finishing ncerts would help u understand newspaper articles better… then comes optional. January to March is rightest time for ncerts & optionals, while finishing optional & ncerts, focus only on 1 newspaper(The Hindu)… if without finishing ncerts & optionals u r investing 3 or 4 hours in insights, it may not be much beneficial enough. Finish optional & u would be much relaxed, then focus on further reading of articles on Secure Mains… If u want to do it parallely & can handle both at a time, its fyn enough !! Everyone has his/her own strategy. Remember, It would be sucidal if your ncerts are not complete and u r reading 3 newspapers!!
I hope Insights administrator not blocks me for this advise !!

        1. Sir please suggest which class ncert is to be followed like in geography and economic I read class 11 and 12 ncert but for polity and modern history I am going through Laxmikant and spectrum please suggest sir what else to be done as I am a working fellow with only Insights and mrunal as a mentor

      1. Hi ! I joined Vajiram July batch. When they will finish the syllabus ? Is it advisable to stay in Delhi or go native to continue preparation!?i feel stressed here. I joined insights test series also couldn’t handle all the things. Just running from pole to post. Optional is literature. Completed 25%. NCERT started from 6 std. Here n there over. But not satisfied. Am I going in a correct direction.? Also each chapter of ncert takes 1 hour appro. Is it a good speed. ?guide me.

          1. Sir My Optional is political science & international relation what is my strategy from jan to aug??
how i complete my optional and how i start prelims preparation

              1. Sir what about GS-1,2,3,4 preparation
can i start GS-2 then GS-3 then optional 1 nd then prelim preparation

                1. See here you have to be cautious. First finish the prelims syllabus as prelims syllabus is the base of Mains preparation. W/o finishing prelims syllabi you wud not understand well the requirements of Mains. However, along with finishing prelims syllabi if u r following Hindu & Vision Current Affairs, then u need not worry much about Mains as questions in GS 2,3 & 4 are mainly from newspapers only. Finish prelims syllabi till March, then finish Optional Paper 1 till May end. From June start revision from Prelims & u can easily finish Optional Paper 2 after Prelims. Always remember Optional is more important than GS as far as quantity of marks achieved in concerned!! If this is sufficiently done, u’re surely getting a rank in 2016 !!

                  1. sir i understand nd follow ur guidence
but my last question is about when and how to start answer writing practice

                    1. Friend, to be very practical, answer writing could be easily practiced within 3 months gap b/w Prelims & mains. No need of answer writing right now if ur ncerts & optionals are not complete.

                    2. when to start paper practice?
it is right time after finish my ncert
which institute to join for paper practice

                    3. Can you sir jst little guide me as i m working professional nd i got only 6 hrs frm dat
                      Can you jst guide me???

                    4. No worries, optimize ur time. Dont waste tym on newspapers, use the tym to finish NCERTs & optionals. For current affairs, just refer Vision current affairs notes monthly, it wud be enough w/o newspapers as well!!

                    5. Sir,

Is it really sufficient to follow vision ias ca notes. Pls dont take it otherwise I am not doubting your strategy, but as i am in a very unreached place at chhattisgarh and preparing by self without attending any question, here I am unable to receive The HIndu. But updating current affairs by vision ca monthly notes available online. Am I going in right direction…pls throw some light

      2. Hi sir,I am preparing for civil services examination. This is going to be my third attempt.I have not cleared prelims for two times.i have doubts regading preparation.please help me.I am zero in answer writing. After visiting insights I understood that I have to improve a lot.Sir,how to efficiently use insights.Should we answer each and every question in secure? Is hindu newspaper sufficient or should I refer one more?sir please guide me.I am tensed as it is already jan..Thanking u

        1. Just you need to follow right sequence for prepration. First finish NCERTs, then optional & then come to Secure Mains. Don’t worry, nobody is zero in answer writing. Its just a myth in your mind !!
The detailed strategy for prelims is mentioned here :

          1. Thank u very much sir.Sir in the syllabus there are some topics which are meant exclusively for mains like world history, security issues etc.insights has mentioned sources from where to read each topic.is it required too read all those. It seems very hectic.how should be my approach to mains? What are the additional readings required for mains?thanking u sir

            1. For World History refer to Arjun Dev old NCERT , no need for other high level books.
Security Issues : refer to any coaching material, I followed Vision material(its good) it covers the basics and then just keep on updating them with current affairs. Sorry, I am busy these days, in some time I would come up with detailed strategy for Mains on this channel !!

    6. Please suggest how many question one should attempt .?? How much time you devoted initially ??
5 to 6 hour is taking in answer writing and reading all newpaper link ..how u managed initially
      Plz tell

      1. Yeah… it will take lot of time initially. So I wud suggest finish Ncerts first, then finish ur optional and then come 2 insights secure mains initiative. Till the time u cover ncert and optional follow the hindu and vision current affairs only otherwise reading 3 newspapers without finishing ur optional & ncert wud do more harm than good !!

    7. After you shared so many links, I’m kind of sure now, that you are here just for traffic. You want people to follow you or join you somewhere.

      🙂 Just a opinion, Don’t get serious.

          1. Use e.g. from current affairs in ur answers, link it to paper 1. e.g. in questions related to democracy u can quote Leibnitz Monadology being democratic in character . e.g. from current affairs wud be the unique point in ur answers !!

                  1. If you have good knowledge and command over philosophy it’s help in essay
In optional you can score max 350+
Cover all syllabus in 2-3 months
                    Then start writing answers
                    Good luck ✌?️

                    1. do you have question bank or model questions of philosophy / Mitras or patanjali’s question bank or last 10-15 years topic wise question???? plz forward

                    2. i dont hv any soft copy..

            1. Hi sadhguru.. how many questions have you attempted and is it easy to recollect all the points at the time of mains exam.. as I am newbie.. many of my frnds (senior) were saying that they had attempte 15- 16 and only with 150- 180 word limit..plz reply..

          2. hi cityboy i guess u also have philosophy optional can u suggest the study material, notes, books or online lectures which are good for it…as i am new in it…currently i have taken patanjali notes and some books and watching nptel lectures for concepts..but not feeling satisfied with the preparation of philosophy

            1. for western philosophy : 1) Y Masih 2) D.Palmer
for indian philosophy : 1) CD Sharma and 2) Dutta and Chatterjee
              for religious philosophy: Hick
              for socio-political philosophy: O.P GAUBA

Mastery in these books is must in addition to any coaching notes, moreover you should be well versed with each article in syllabus on SEP (stanford encyclopaedia) before you can feel satisfied with preparation.

  23. hello everyone . I am first time aspirant and facing some issues . could you please provide some guidance . I will be really thankful to you .
My que(silly) are as follows :

1.) I am not able to manage Secure ques with the studies . currently , I am studying NCERTs . If i focus and do all insight que by googling up and then forming an answer it takes a lot of time and since insight posts 8-9 que each day , it takes most of time of day .

    2) if i decide not to do insight que and do them say, from august , I am afraid there will be too many que to follow up and it will become nearly impossible to cover them all .

3.) doing secure que simultaneously with normal GS prep is making my progress very slow, as i feel .

Plz feel free to criticize or say anything (like i am an idiot and not putting in required number of hours 😀 )

  36. Guys,

Happy to share with you, have been sincerely-consistently following insights current affairs for last 50 days..making notes of most of the questions..writing a few questions and journey is really interesting..
There are few challenges I m facing, I m sure- few of you will have same challenges..

I am looking for a very small group of only 3-4 guys who are regularly and sincerely doing current affairs question daily.
so that we can REVISE and REVIEW each others OLD INSIGHTS CURRENT AFFAIRS QUESTIONS.. (Reason: in this community- only fresh questions are reviewed.. )

Large groups in wotsapp- is not working out! (tried and tested- it is lot of waste of time sometime without much utility.

    Secondly: for like minded guys:
Looking for 3-4 guys who are preparing/revising- topic Geomorphology
so that once this topic is over- we can close our group and move on with new set of group or the same as per need.

This kind of flexibility in groups and small size of group will be much useful than big groups where we have to mute the group.

anyone who shares my idea/belief is welcome- but please only serious/sincere aspirant only..
We should help each other in pushing if someone is slow in group..

    Wishing you all Good Luck..

Anyone interested please reply your number. or message me.

          1. I am not very clear which are you are talking about. But my Personal experience and conviction says it is sufficient to cover insights and “Regular & Consistent” revisions of the questions from same source(where you have made notes and is updating them on time to time basis)- is the key to crack mains exam.
Insights is a Gem! even for pre- it provides absolutely sufficient Stuff- (my personal opinion)

  37. All,

After preparing for iAS (will be attempting iAS 2016 Preliminary) for some months, I am in dilemma of will i be able to crack even Preliminary exam because of my current preparation status, preparation strategy and some personal issues:

    My current preparation status
    – Completed India struggle for independence by Bipin Chandra.
    – Completed Indian Polity by Laxmikant
    – Couldn’t even start the rest of the subjects/syllabus i.e. Geography, Biodiversity, economics etc.
    – Reading Insight current events almost daily. But not able to read newspaper because of time constraints.
    – I am starting now NCERT books for X, XI and XII only.
    – Not able to follow other resource like PIB.
    – My most of the time is going into making Notes on current affairs.

    My current preparation strategy.
    – I make notes of current affairs from Insight in evernote.

Below i am mentioning how i m making notes.

    On Particular Topic
What? About? Audience? How? Benefits? Criticism?

    Some problems:
    – I am currently working on top position in Software Industry, and not able to give much time(even trying hard to allocate time) to iAS preparation (Max 3 hours only)
    – I am married also, so couldn’t leave the job and have to give time to family as well (weekends).
    – And after preparation for some months, i am feeling that my Preparation Strategy is wrong (After reading people answers in daily writing challenge, i understood that i don’t have this much knowledge and forming the idea about particular subject. Since i do not have time for thinking as well about particular subject/topic. So basically i am reading and making notes).
    – Not much good in English(grammatical, vocabulary because of my schooling was in Hindi Medium) and now i forgot the Hindi as well (writing, words meaning)
    – My aptitude also not much good.

I strongly want to clear UPSC. Please respond asap since i am completely demotivated. A lot of thanks for your valuable suggestions..

  38. some please explain the section 17 of civil liability of nuclear damage act
“The operator of the nuclear installation, after paying the compensation for nuclear damage in accordance with section 6, shall have a right of recourse where-the nuclear incident has resulted is a consequence of an act of supplier or his employee, which includes supply of equipment or material with patent or latent defects or sub-standard services.”

    1. here the right of recourse, means. the extent to which
suppliers of nuclear material can be held liable for damages caused due
to a nuclear accident in India.
so if u understand this then the section says that in case of any damage due to nuclear accident the operator(in this case respective Indian authority ) can ask the supplier (the foreign company or firm) why this happened and also for the compensation. but only when the cause of accident is due to any defect in the equipment supplied.
that means if the accident happens, say due to a natural calamity then we cant held them responsible for the damage.
      hope it is clear now..:)

      1. in Paris and Vienna convention….the whole sole responsibility is on operator…..but in CLND act…india fixing responsibility on supplier country also……am i right???

    1. please see this video… this will give us a different perspective on Nationalism/Free Speech/JNU/Rohith Vemula debate (far away from what The Hindu has persistently tried to create)

  39. As there are dearth of questions of GS-1 on the site, could anyone please refer any location suitable for GS1 model questions.

  40. Dear team,

You can find details of the course at http://www.visionias.in/old/schedule_if.php?id=4078&exam=Classroom

If you’re interested, write to me at sukumarvd@gmail.com , we can figure out a way to share the costs and the course.

  52. Dear Insights , Why are you not giving synopsis of Secure 2016 in April ? It is a noble initiative Kindly do not stop it.

    Thank you.

  53. “Synopsis” was one of the best initiations by Insights team. Why did it not post since last six days? Many aspirants including myself, are eager to read it. Please Insights, continue that initiation. Working professionals like me and many others heavily rely on it.

  64. Q/ What is the nature of crisis in Political Theory ? Suggest remedies.

Ans. Political theory through the entire course of history often has become the subject of intellectual and ideological controversies.

The rejection of Normative analysis of the political concepts like Power,Authority,Justice or Rights by the value-neutral studies of some of the thinkers of Quantitative revolution like David Easton created FIRST level of the crisis during mid of Twentieth century.

Logical Positivism, originally advanced by a group of political thinkers called ‘Vienna Circle” reflected a deep faith in scientific understanding and declared some of the Core Values of political theory like Liberty,Equality or Justice etc.as not impirically verifiable and thus nonsense.

The rise of Behaviouralism discarded entire tradition of Normative political thinking. The political ideas were redefined by them in terms of reasonable political behavior.

The growing dissatisfaction with Behavioral ism among the new generations of political thinkers after 1960’s created the SECOND level of crisis in the study of political theory.Thomas Kuhn, for example emphasized that scientific knowledge is not absolute but is contingent upon the principles, doctrines and theories that structure the process of “Scientific Enquiry”

Hence the rise of new social movements brought Normative and Ideological questions back to the forefront to the study of political theory by new generations of thinkers like John Rawls and Robert Mozick creating THIRD level of crisis.

However, the revived political theory was in many respects different from their earlier manifestations.Unlike in the past the post-modern thinkers placed more importance upon the role of history and culture in shaping the political understanding. The debates within the debates of nature of crisis of political theory has given birth to many new ideas

    like-Communitarianism,Multiculturalism and anti-foundationist debates.

Now i am actually building up my basics. So i am not getting much time left .

  85. hello,
I am just an anonymous reader of answers on the Disqus forum.
i was wondering if anyone could suggest me regarding the same.
My question might sound IRRELEVANT to you but let me tell you in my defence that i am at very JUVENILE stage of my preparation.

My question is;- The answers which you write for questions posted there, how do you proceed about it
Do you take a paper and a pen and start writing about it whatever comes in your mind ? OR
DO you search and read about that topic and then FRAME the answers accordingly?

    Thanks

    1. Friend just explore about the issue if you don’t have any background on it.Otherwise it is fine if you just start proceeding right away.Whichever suits you more.People shall always be around to correct you and help you out.You can read a few answers of those who are regular in SECURE.That way you would get an idea on how to frame your answers.

  86. sir,

  87. Hello ‘Team Insights’,
