Context: Ahmedabad-based spacetech startup Satleo Labs launched TAPAS-1, India’s first commercial private thermal-imaging payload, aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket via the Transporter-18 rideshare mission from California.

About TAPAS-1:
What it is?
- The Thermal Access Platform for Analytics & Solutions (TAPAS-1) is India’s first indigenously designed commercial private thermal-imaging nanosatellite payload, built as a 1.5-kg modular CubeSat. It acts as an orbital thermometer for the Earth, capturing variations in thermal infrared radiation emitted from the planet’s surface.
Developed by: Satleo Labs, an Ahmedabad-based spacetech startup incorporated in 2023 by entrepreneur Shravan Singh Bhati, retired ISRO scientist Dr. Ranendu Ghosh, and business strategist Urmil Bakhai.
Launch Vehicle: SpaceX Falcon 9 (part of the 130-satellite Transporter-18 dedicated rideshare mission).
Orbital Profile: Deployed into a 500-km Sun-Synchronous Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
Mission Lifespan: Designed for a 3-year baseline operational mission, to be followed by TAPAS-2 and the planned PYRO constellation (10–15 microsatellites) by 2029.
Aim: To provide sovereign, cost-effective, high-resolution thermal intelligence directly to commercial, civic, and defense users, democratizing access to Earth observation analytics without requiring dedicated ground station hardware.
Key Applications & Features:
- Urban Heat Island (UHI) Mapping: Tracks micro-level surface temperature gradients across dense city sectors, equipping urban municipal bodies with precise thermal data to mitigate heat stress and guide climate-resilient zoning.
- Precision Agriculture & Water Stress Management: Measures soil surface moisture depletion and crop evapotranspiration, allowing farmers and agrarian enterprises to detect crop stress and optimize micro-irrigation scheduling before visible foliage damage occurs.
- Wildfire & Thermal Disaster Tracking: Detects subterranean smoldering, tracks active forest fire fronts through smoke haze, and identifies industrial hot spots in near real-time.
- Subsurface Geological & Archaeological Detection: Leverages differences in thermal inertia to spot hidden subterranean ruins, buried geological faults, and potential shallow mineral/hydrocarbon deposits.
- Direct-to-User AI Integration: Combines onboard thermal sensors with cloud-based machine learning to convert raw measurements into sector-specific predictive insights.
