Anecdote: On 1 September 2026, the Indian Air Force witnessed a milestone when Shakti Sharma became the first non-medical woman officer in the Indian Defence Forces to attain the two-star rank of Air Vice Marshal or equivalent. Commissioned into the IAF’s Education Branch in 1994, her journey spanned training institutions, field stations and command headquarters. She helped establish IAF Chairs of Excellence to strengthen collaboration between defence and academia. Earlier, she had become the first woman officer from the Tri-Services to command a Sainik School, serving as Principal of Sainik School Kapurthala. Her rise reflects the gradual dismantling of institutional barriers that once restricted women’s advancement in the armed forces. It demonstrates that leadership is determined by competence, experience and opportunity rather than gender. Her journey can be used as an example of women’s empowerment, breaking the glass ceiling, institutional inclusion and transformative leadership.
