About Colombia:

What It Is?

  • Colombia (officially the Republic of Colombia) is a unitary, multiparty republic situated in northwestern South America. It is the only nation in South America with coastlines along both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

Capital: Bogotá (located on a high plateau in the northern Andes).

Coastlines: Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Land Borders: Panama (northwest), Venezuela (east), Brazil (southeast), Peru (south), and Ecuador (southwest).

Key Geographical Features:

  • Triple Andean Cordillera Branching: Near the southern border, the Andes Mountains flare out into three distinct, roughly parallel mountain ranges running north: the Cordillera Occidental, the volcanic Cordillera Central (backbone of the system), and the Cordillera Oriental.
  • Magdalena and Cauca River Valleys: Two major river systems separate the three Andean ranges, flowing northward to provide rich inter-Andean agricultural floors and critical drainage basins.
  • Diverse Topographic Zones: Extends from high-altitude Andean plateaus (Páramos and the Sabana de Bogotá) to the northern Caribbean lowlands, the rain-drenched Pacific coast, the eastern savanna plains (Llanos Orientales), and the dense Amazonian rainforest (Selva).
  • Isolated Coastal Mountain Massif: Features the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, an isolated granitic mountain range on the Caribbean coast home to Colombia’s highest twin peaks: Pico Cristóbal Colón and Pico Simón Bolívar (5,775 meters).
  • Biodiversity & Ecosystem Diversity: Ranked as one of the world’s mega-diverse nations, encompassing volcanic highlands, tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and UNESCO-recognized biosphere areas.

Earthquake Vulnerability of Colombia:

  • Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the Nazca and Caribbean Plates subduct beneath the South American Plate, causing frequent earthquakes.
  • Dense Andean fault systems generate powerful earthquakes, affecting major cities like Cali, Pereira, and Manizales.
