About Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Technology:
What It Is?
- Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) technology is an advanced wireless communication framework that enables nearby motor vehicles to continuously broadcast and receive real-time data regarding their speed, location, direction, acceleration, and braking status.
- Unlike traditional sensors that require a direct line of sight, V2V enables proactive accident prevention by warning drivers about hidden hazards beyond their visual range.
Proposed Rollout Timeline in India:
- Standard Framework: Governed by the newly drafted AIS-230 (Automotive Industry Standard).
- Voluntary Compliance Phase: From October 1, 2027, vehicles voluntarily equipped with V2V hardware must comply with AIS-230 rules.
- Mandatory Phase: Mandatory for all newly produced L, M, and N category vehicles manufactured on or after October 1, 2028.
- Spectrum Band: Operates on the dedicated 5.875 GHz to 5.925 GHz frequency band using Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology, which the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) exempted from licensing requirements.
Aim: To significantly reduce road fatalities and accidents in India by complementing existing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), expanding situational awareness, and building a foundation for broader Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
How It Works?
- On-Board Units (OBUs): Vehicles are equipped with factory-fitted On-Board Units that continuously transmit low-latency data packets containing GPS coordinates, velocity, trajectory, and status alerts.
- Peer-to-Peer Data Mesh: Transmissions take place directly between nearby vehicles within a range of several hundred meters without relying on cellular towers or cloud servers.
- Real-Time Risk Computation: An onboard processor analyzes received data against the host vehicle’s vector to calculate collision risks within milliseconds, triggering visual, audio, or haptic driver warnings before a hazard is visible.
Key Features of AIS-230 Standard:
- License-Exempt C-V2X Spectrum: Uses direct Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) radio channels operating in the 5.9 GHz band (5.875 GHz–5.925 GHz).
- Comprehensive Technical Rigor: Defines strict benchmarks for receiver sensitivity, GNSS positioning accuracy, power supply protection, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
- 360-Degree Non-Line-of-Sight Coverage: Functions effectively around sharp curves, blind junctions, and through heavy weather conditions or large obstructing trucks.
- Built-in Cybersecurity Framework: Mandates encrypted authentication protocols to prevent signal spoofing, unauthorized message tampering, and cyber-attacks.
Primary Applications:
- Emergency Electronic Brake Light (EEBL): Warns trailing drivers when a vehicle several cars ahead applies sudden hard braking, preventing multi-car pileups.
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Alerts the driver when a front-end crash is imminent due to slowing or stopped traffic.
- Blind Spot & Lane Change Warnings: Notifies drivers if a vehicle is approaching fast in a neighboring blind-spot lane during overtaking maneuvers.
- Wrong-Way Driving Alert: Detects oncoming vehicles driving in the wrong lane on divided highways or one-way roads.
- Emergency Vehicle Approaching Alert: Informs drivers of approaching ambulances, fire engines, or police vehicles, giving them advance notice to clear the lane.
