Key Features:

  • The Massive Voltaian Basin & Lake Volta: Dominates the central and northern interior. It holds Lake Volta, one of the world’s largest artificial lakes (covering ~8,500 sq km), impounded by the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam.
  • Akwapim-Togo Mountain Ranges: A prominent narrow chain of folded Precambrian mountain ridges stretching along the eastern border with Togo. It contains Ghana’s highest point, Mount Afadjato (2,903 feet / 885 meters).
  • Dissected Precambrian Peneplain & Scarps: Framing the Voltaian Basin are uplifted plateau scarps—most notably the Kwahu (Mampong) Scarp in the south and Gambaga Scarp in the north—drained by major rivers like the Pra, Ankobra, and Tano.
  • Impact Crater Lake Bosumtwi: Located south of Kumasi, Lake Bosumtwi is Ghana’s only true natural lake, formed within an ancient meteorite impact crater with no natural outlet to the ocean.

Significance:

  • The first Sub-Saharan African country to gain independence (1957), Ghana remains a key voice in the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS.
  • A leading exporter of cocoa and rich in gold, bauxite, manganese, and offshore petroleum, making it a major West African economy.
