What It Is?
- Typhoon Bavi (designated as Tropical Cyclone 09W by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center) is a massive, highly destructive tropical cyclone operating in the Western Pacific basin.
- Measuring nearly 1,000 km in width and covering a storm area of 940,000 square kilometers, Bavi stands as one of the largest and most powerful storms by physical size to threaten the region in decades.

- Initial Vector: Originally formed in the open Pacific, hitting U.S. territories like Guam and making a destructive Category 5-equivalent direct hit on the island of Rota in the Northern Mariana Islands.
- Current Impact Zone: Churning directly over Japan’s southwestern Sakishima Islands (Okinawa Prefecture), grazing the northern and mountainous eastern coastlines of Taiwan, and tracking toward a final destructive landfall in the eastern Chinese coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian (near Wenzhou/Shanghai).
How It Formed?
The system originated as a minor tropical disturbance east-southeast of Kwajalein on June 25, 2026. As it drifted into the Philippine Sea, it encountered exceptionally favorable atmospheric conditions:
- Highly elevated sea surface temperatures (SSTs) reaching 29OC-30OC, which pumped vast amounts of thermal energy into the core.
- Very low vertical wind shear (5 to 10 knots), allowing the storm’s convective wall to stack vertically without breaking apart.
- High relative humidity levels in the middle atmosphere.
Naming Conventions:
- The name Bavi was contributed to the international tropical cyclone roster by Vietnam.
- In the Vietnamese language, it refers to the famous Ba Vì Mountain Range, a prominent, bio-diverse mountain chain located near Hanoi.
- The name is cycled through a rotating list maintained by the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) Typhoon Committee to identify storms in the Western Pacific.
Significance:
- The typhoon disrupted northern Taiwan, forcing TSMC to suspend office operations and delay sales data, highlighting global chip supply-chain vulnerability to extreme weather.
- The typhoon’s vast radius threatens torrential rainfall, flash floods, and severe disruption across Taiwan and eastern China’s agricultural and industrial regions.
