  • While forestry officials successfully contained immediate concerns regarding a Babesia parasite outbreak, this event underscores a deeper structural crisis: the ecological saturation of a single habitat.

About Asiatic Lion Crisis

  • Overcrowded habitats push Gir’s Asiatic lions into human-dominated zones, exposing them to infrastructure hazards and lethal diseases. A single epidemic risks total extinction, making habitat diversification and translocation an urgent necessity.

Context and Current Status

  • Victim of Success:
    • Dedicated conservation efforts have driven a massive population recovery. The lion population rose sharply from 674 in 2020 to 891 in 2025.
  • Spatial Limitations:
    • These 891 lions are distributed across a 35,000 sq km landscape in the Saurashtra region. The core protected sanctuary is entirely full, forcing a vast number of lions to live outside protected boundaries.

  • Sunk Costs at Kuno:
    • Kuno National Park was established and upgraded back in 1981 specifically for lions. Several villages were relocated, and significant public funds were spent to create a human-free, prey-rich ecosystem.

 Arguments Against/Delaying Translocation

  • Symbol of State Pride:
    • The Asiatic lion is closely tied to the identity and cultural pride of Gujarat. The state argues that its communities have uniquely protected these animals for over a century.
  • Current Landscape Expansion:
    • The Gujarat Forest Department highlights that the lions are naturally dispersing and establishing new home ranges within the state (such as the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary), arguing that intra-state expansion is safer than inter-state translocation.

 Way Forward

To secure the long-term survival of the Asiatic lion while balancing federal and regional sensitivities, India must adopt a multi-layered strategy:

  • Strict Implementation of Judicial Orders:
    • The Supreme Court’s 2013 ruling must be honored. This requires political consensus-building between the Union government, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, moving beyond regional politics to view the lion as a national heritage asset under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
  • Phased, Scientific Reintroduction:
    • The initial translocation to Kuno should be done in phases, moving small, carefully selected prides. This allows scientists to monitor how lions interact with the existing cheetah population without sudden shocks to either species.
  • Strengthening Satellite Sanctuaries:
    • Concurrently, Gujarat must fast-track the development of its internal backup sites, like the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, to immediately offload the population pressure from the Gir core area.
  • A ‘One-Health’ Security Ring:
    • A rigorous health buffer zone must be maintained around Gir. This includes mandatory, systematic vaccination of all domestic animals and stray dogs in peripheral villages to prevent viral spillovers.
