Context: The ISRO successfully completed the flight acceptance hot test of its indigenous CE20 cryogenic engine for the upcoming LVM3-M7 mission at the ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri.

About The CE20 Cryogenic Engine:
What It Is?
- The CE20 is a high-thrust, indigenously developed cryogenic rocket engine that powers the upper stage (C25/C32 flight stage) of India’s heaviest operational launch vehicle, the Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3).
- It burns super-cooled liquid propellants to generate the massive velocity needed to inject heavy payloads into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbits (GTO) and deep-space trajectories.
Developed By: Developed by ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) and qualified through testing at the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC).
Background:
- CE20 replaced the smaller CE-7.5 with a more reliable indigenous design and has successfully powered eight consecutive LVM3 missions, including Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3.
Core Aim: It provides a reliable indigenous upper-stage engine for heavy satellites, LEO constellations, and human spaceflight missions such as Gaganyaan.
Key Technical Features:
- Gas-Generator Cycle: Uses a simpler gas-generator cycle, improving engine reliability, easier startup, and better control during upper-stage operations.
- Cryogenic Propellant Matrix: Burns liquid hydrogen (LH₂) and liquid oxygen (LOX), delivering high efficiency for heavy-lift space missions.
- Flexible Thrust Throttling: Operates between 19–22 tonnes of thrust, allowing stable performance across different mission requirements.
- Nozzle Protection System (NPS): Enables safe sea-level testing of the large cryogenic nozzle without costly high-altitude vacuum test facilities.
- Human-Rated Safety Architecture: Incorporates redundant systems, structural safety margins, and health monitoring to meet Gaganyaan crew safety standards.
Applications:
- Upper-Stage Engine for LVM3: CE20 provides the final propulsion needed to place heavy communication satellites and deep-space missions into precise orbits.
- Core Engine for Gaganyaan: The human-rated CE20 will power LVM3’s upper stage, safely placing Indian astronauts into low-Earth orbit.
