What It Is?

  • BrahMos is a medium-range, universal supersonic cruise missile that operates on a distinct “Fire and Forget” Flying at a blistering speed of Mach 2.8, it holds the title of the fastest operational cruise missile in the world and is the only supersonic cruise missile available for export globally.

Developed By:

The missile is manufactured by BrahMos Aerospace, a highly successful joint venture established in 1998 between:

  • India: Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), holding a 50.5% majority stake.
  • Russia: NPO Mashinostroyeniya, holding a 49.5% stake.
  • The Regulatory: Because of this joint venture architecture, Moscow retains a veto and must explicitly concur on every third-country sale.

Aim: The objective of the BrahMos weapon system is to provide cross-platform, long-range precision strike capabilities against heavily defended land and maritime targets.

Global Export from India: The Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Key Technical Features:

  • Two-Stage Propulsion System: BrahMos uses a solid-fuel booster for rapid launch and acceleration, followed by a liquid-fuel ramjet engine that sustains supersonic cruise speed of Mach 2.8.
  • True Multi-Platform Universality: The missile can be launched from land, warships, submarines, and Su-30MKI aircraft, giving all three Indian Armed Forces a common precision-strike weapon.
  • Advanced Sea-Skimming Architecture: BrahMos cruises at high altitude but descends to as low as 5 metres above sea level near the target, making radar detection extremely difficult.
  • Massive Kinetic Impact Lethality: Carrying a 200 kg warhead at Mach 2.8, BrahMos delivers enormous kinetic energy capable of destroying heavily fortified military targets.
  • MTCR Range Boundaries: Export versions are limited to 290 km under MTCR norms, while India deploys extended-range variants exceeding 450 km for domestic use.
  • Canisterized Storage Infrastructure: The missile is stored and launched from a sealed Transport Launch Canister (TLC), ensuring long shelf life, quick deployment, and minimal maintenance.
