What It Is?
- The Pyre Protest (Chita Andolan) is a peaceful symbolic protest in which affected people sit beside funeral pyres to express that losing their land, homes, forests, and livelihoods is equivalent to social death.
Aim: To demand fair rehabilitation, adequate compensation, and timely resettlement for families displaced by major development projects.
Key Features:
- Symbolic Protest: Protesters gather beside funeral pyres with the slogan Provide us justice or death to symbolize extreme distress.
- Tribal-Led Movement: The agitation is led mainly by tribal women affected by the Ken–Betwa Link Project and other irrigation projects.
- Rehabilitation Demands: Protesters allege delays in compensation, housing, rehabilitation packages, and forced demolitions before proper resettlement.
- Environmental Concerns: The movement also raises concerns over forest loss, wildlife impacts (including Panna Tiger Reserve), and ecological damage to the Ken River.
