  • The greater hog badger (Arctonyx collaris) is a nocturnal, medium-sized burrowing omnivore. It is locally referred to as ‘mati gahori’ (earth pig) in Assamese due to its pig-like snout and digging behavior. It is the largest of the three globally extant hog badger species.

Habitat and Distribution:

  • Local Range: It is widely distributed across the diverse ecosystems of Northeast India, particularly within the 1,100 sq. km floodplain network of the Kaziranga landscape.
  • Global Range: Its geographic distribution spans parts of South, Central, and Southeast Asia. This includes a range extending from Bangladesh and northeastern India eastward through Myanmar, Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
  • Ecological Niche: As a highly fossorial mammal (adapted for digging and living underground), it is primarily found in forest floors, grasslands, and areas with soft soils rich in leaf litter where it can easily forage.
