About The Zojila Tunnel:

What It Is?

  • The Zojila Tunnel is an under-construction, horseshoe-shaped, two-lane road tunnel that stands as India’s highest and longest road tunnel, as well as Asia’s longest bi-directional, single-tube bypass. Located under the treacherous Zoji La Pass on National Highway 1 (NH-1), the tunnel is engineered to operate reliably for at least 100 years.

Location: Connects Sonamarg (Baltal) in Jammu and Kashmir with Minamarg (Drass/Kargil) in Ladakh.

  • Situated at a record altitude of 11,578 feet (above 3,000 meters) above sea level within the young and seismically active Himalayan range.

Constructed By: National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

Aim: The primary aim of the tunnel is to eliminate winter isolation for the Ladakh region. Historically, heavy snowfall, avalanches, and landslides shut down the Zojila Pass for up to six months each year, cutting off Ladakh completely.

Key Features of the Engineering Marvel:

  • Physical Dimensions: The main bi-directional tube is 13.15 kilometers long, 9.5 meters wide, and 7.57 meters high. It forms part of a wider 33-km connectivity corridor that integrates approach roads and twin-tube tunnels.
  • The New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM): Due to the unpredictable, loose, and un-condensed nature of the young Himalayan geology, engineers utilized NATM. This involves sequential, calculated blasting, immediate structural reinforcement with shotcrete and rock bolting, and continuous electronic geotechnical monitoring.
  • Massive Travel Time Reduction: Once open to the public, the grueling and dangerous journey across the Zojila Pass stretch will drop from 3.5 hours to just 15 to 20 minutes, while reducing the physical travel distance from 40 km to 13 km.
  • Advanced Smart Safety Systems: The interior architecture is being outfitted with fully automated ventilation systems, emergency pedestrian cross-passages, automated fire detection loops, continuous CCTV monitoring, and dedicated maintenance walkways.
  • Local Employment Generator: The project has logged over 11.25 million man-hours with zero casualties. The workforce includes more than 1,200 personnel, roughly 80% of whom are local residents from the region.
  • Target Completion Date: With 85% of the macro project now complete, internal lining and electrical system integration will take place ahead of the final public commissioning targeted for February 2028.
