A small word of caution for aspirants

Do not panic if your score is close to the expected cutoff range. Answer key based score calculation is useful, but it should not become a reason for emotional stress. If your score is in a reasonable zone, start preparing for Mains without waiting too long. The time after Prelims is precious, and those who use it well often gain a real advantage.

How to calculate your UPSC Prelims 2026 score

For General Studies Paper 1

In GS Paper 1, each correct answer carries 2 marks. For every wrong answer, one third of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. Candidates can calculate their probable GS score by adding marks for correct answers and subtracting the negative marks for incorrect answers.

For CSAT Paper 2

CSAT is qualifying in nature. Candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks as prescribed by UPSC. Even if your GS Paper 1 score is good, CSAT should not be ignored while checking your overall Prelims status.

What should you do after checking the answer key?

The first step is to calculate your score honestly. Avoid adding marks for doubtful questions unless you are fully sure. Keep a separate note of questions where there is confusion, because these can make a difference if your score is near the borderline.

The second step is to avoid over discussion. After a point, repeated comparison with friends, Telegram groups and social media cutoffs can increase anxiety without giving any real clarity. Use the answer key as a guide, not as a final judgement of your result.

The third step is to begin Mains preparation if your score is in a workable range. This is especially important because Mains preparation requires writing practice, content consolidation, optional subject revision and a clear answer writing rhythm.

For students who are unsure about their score

If your score is very high, your next step is clear. Start Mains preparation immediately. If your score is very low, take a short break, review the paper and plan the next attempt with maturity. But if your score is in the middle zone, do not waste the next few weeks in confusion. Begin Mains preparation and keep yourself ready until the official result is declared.
