About The Kopra Reservoir:

What It Is?

Location: Situated in the Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, India.

Primary Role: Functions as a vital socio-economic and hydrological anchor for regional communities while acting as a crucial sanctuary for diverse aquatic life and avifauna.

Origin and History:

  • Originally constructed as an artificial water storage reservoir to support local agricultural irrigation and fish farming, Kopra gradually transformed over the decades into a thriving, self-sustaining wetland ecosystem.
  • Local communities and village panchayats traditionally co-managed its waters for survival.
  • Realizing its unique avian influx, environmentalists pushed for official preservation, leading to its historic international recognition under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 2025.

Key Characteristics:

  • Critical Migratory Bird Flyway Node: Functions as a vital stopover and wintering sanctuary for thousands of long-distance migratory birds traversing international borders and complex central Indian flyways annually.
  • Rich Trophic Food Web: Features a highly productive aquatic ecosystem with an abundant supply of natural foraging materials, macro-invertebrates, and diverse local fish species.
  • Complex Micro-Habitats: Combines open deep-water zones with shallow marshy edges and aquatic vegetation beds, catering to the nesting and roosting preferences of various waterbirds.
  • Community-Led Bio-Fencing: Protected by organic, living green barriers (bio-fencing) planted along its perimeter to naturally insulate vulnerable avian breeding grounds from human encroachment and stray cattle.
  • Hydrological Stabilizer: Acts as a massive natural groundwater recharge basin for the Bilaspur district, maintaining the water table equilibrium and feeding nearby agricultural fields.

Significance of the Site:

  • Community-Led Conservation: Local youth groups, schools, and SHGs actively manage cleanliness, waste removal, and wetland monitoring.
  • First Ramsar Site for Chhattisgarh: The designation boosts Chhattisgarh’s global conservation profile and improves access to funding and technical support.
  • Support for Local Livelihoods: Conservation measures allow sustainable fishing and traditional farming while protecting the wetland ecosystem.
