What It Is?

  • The Kali night frog is a newly documented amphibian belonging to the ancient genus Nyctibatrachus (night frogs), which is entirely endemic to the Western Ghats mountain range.

Habitat: It inhabits the pristine, torrential stream ecosystems and humid leaf litter of the Castlerock rainforest region within the Kali river catchment basin.

Key Characteristics:

  • Cryptic Nature: It is morphologically almost identical to the previously known Kumbara night frog (Nyctibatrachus kumbara), making it a “cryptic species” that can only be accurately identified using modern laboratory tools.
  • Distinct Genetic Lineage: Advanced DNA isolation and sequencing confirmed that the frog represents an entirely separate, unique evolutionary lineage from all other known night frogs in independent India.
  • Unique Bioacoustic Call Profile: Acoustic analysis of the male frog’s mating call revealed distinct frequency and pulse patterns that separate it from its closest geographical neighbors.
  • Nocturnal Streamside Adaptation: It exhibits specialized micro-habitat preferences, remaining highly active at night near fast-flowing, clear mountain streams and shadowed rock crevices.
  • Tiny Geographical Footprint: Like many members of its genus, the species has an micro-endemic distribution, meaning its global population is restricted to a very small, specific pocket of the central Western Ghats.
