About the KMTTP:

Aspect Information
Project Name The Kaladan Road Project is an initiative connecting the Kolkata seaport in India to the Sittwe seaport in Myanmar via sea. It extends to Paletwa in Chin State through the Kaladan river route, and then by road to Mizoram state in Northeast India.
Route Kolkata (India) – Sittwe (Myanmar) – Paletwa (Myanmar) – India-Myanmar border
Challenges The region around Paletwa faces challenges due to conflicts involving the Chin and Rohingya communities, as well as militant groups like the Arakan Army and the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army.
Significance Reduces distance from Kolkata to Sittwe by approximately 1328 km. Provides an alternative route to connect northeast and mainland India. Reduces dependence on the narrow Siliguri corridor for transporting goods
Status Under construction. 98% of the project is complete. Sittwe Port was made operational last year (2023)
