Context: India celebrated World Wetlands Day 2024 at Sirpur Lake, a Ramsar site in Indore.
- The theme of World Wetlands Day 2024 was ‘Wetlands and Human Wellbeing,’ emphasizing the critical role wetlands play in flood protection, clean water, biodiversity, and recreational opportunities.
- India increased its tally of Ramsar sites to 80 by designating five more wetlands as Ramsar sites recently.
Wetlands are low-lying areas of land that are saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally. They are transition zones between land and water, where the flow of water, the cycling of nutrients, and the energy of the sun meet.
