Context: The Government of India has issued guidelines for pilot projects using green hydrogen in the shipping and steel sectors under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
- The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) will implement these projects, focusing on replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen in the shipping and steel industries.
- For shipping, the pilot projects will retrofit existing ships for green hydrogen use and develop bunkering and refuelling facilities in ports on international shipping lanes.
Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced by splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity. The process is called electrolysis.
