New Initiative: Revision Through MCQs (RTM) – Revision of Current Affairs Made Interesting
As revision is the key to success in this exam, we are starting a new initiative where you will revise current affairs effectively through MCQs (RTM) that are solely based on Insights Daily Current Affairs.
These questions will be different than our regular current affairs quiz. These questions are framed to TEST how well you have read and revised Insights Current Affairs on daily basis.
We will post nearly 10 MCQs every day which are based on previous day’s Insights current affairs. Tonight we will be posting RTM questions on the Insights current affairs of October 3, 2019.
The added advantage of this initiative is it will help you solve at least 20 MCQs daily (5 Static + 5 CA Quiz + 10 RTM) – thereby helping you improve your retention as well as elimination and guessing skills.

Question 1 of 10
1. Question
1 pointsConsider the following statements:
-
- Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) focuses solely on increasing food production to address food security concerns.
- CSA practices aim to enhance agricultural productivity and resilience while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Examples of CSA practices include crop diversification, integrated pest management, and water-efficient irrigation systems.
How many of the above statements are correct?
Correct
Ans: (b)
Explanation:
- Statement 1 is incorrect. While increasing food production is a component of CSA, it is not the sole focus. CSA has a broader objective of achieving food security and sustainable agriculture in the face of climate change.
- Statement 2 is correct. This statement accurately defines the three pillars of CSA: increased productivity, enhanced resilience (adaptation to climate change), and reduced greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation).
- Statement 3 is correct. These are all examples of CSA practices that contribute to achieving the three pillars of CSA

Correct
Ans: (d)
Explanation:
- Context: The Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana, launched recently, aims to provide rooftop solar panels for consumers.
- The scheme intends to supply power to households through solar rooftop installations and offers additional compensation for excess electricity output.
- Key Features:
- The goal is to install rooftop solar on 1 crore houses, providing 1 crore families access to rooftop solar energy.
- The scheme is designed to benefit poor and middle-income households, helping them reduce electricity bills.
- This initiative follows the government’s 2014 Rooftop Solar Programme.

Question 3 of 10
3. Question
1 pointsWith reference to technologies for solar power production, consider the following statements:
-
- Photovoltaics’ is a technology that generates electricity by direct conversion of light into electricity, while ‘Solar Thermal’ is a technology that utilizes the Sun’s rays to generate heat which is further used in the electricity generation process.
- Photovoltaics generates Alternating Current (AC), while Solar Thermal generates Direct Current (DC).
- India has a manufacturing base for Solar Thermal technology, but not for Photovoltaics.
How many of the above statements are correct?
Correct
Ans: (a)
Explanation:
- S1 is Correct: Photovoltaic devices convert optional radiation into electricity. Several solar thermal systems can collect and transform radiant energy received from the sun into high-temperature thermal (heat) energy, which can be used directly or converted into electricity.
- S2 is not correct: Solar energy can be converted directly into electrical energy (direct current, DC) by photovoltaic (PV) cells commonly called solar cells.
- S3 is not correct: India has a manufacturing base for Solar Thermal technology as well as for Photovoltaics.

Question 4 of 10
4. Question
1 pointsConsider the following statements about the deposits of ‘methane hydrate’:
-
- Global warming might trigger the release of methane gas from these deposits.
- Large deposits of ‘methane hydrate’ are found in Arctic Tundra and under the seafloor.
- Methane in the atmosphere oxidizes to carbon dioxide after a decade or two.
How many of the above statements are correct?
Correct
Ans: (c)
Explanation:
- S1 and S2: Large but poorly known amounts of methane are trapped in the
- At low temperatures the methane hydrates on the sea floor are stable, but if the water and the sea floor become warmer, then the hydrates can break down. Because microorganisms then oxidize the resulting methane gas to form the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), methane hydrates have recently become a topic of intense discussion within the context of climate change. See https://worldoceanreview.com/en/wor-1/energy/methane-hydrates/
- S3: Methane is relatively short-lived in the atmosphere; a molecule of methane is oxidized to water and carbon dioxide within a decade or so, mainly by reaction with another trace gas, the hydroxyl radical OH-. Thus, unlike the case of carbon dioxide (which stays in the atmosphere longer than methane), a concerted effort to reduce methane emissions would have almost immediate results in terms of reduction of greenhouse effect. Question 5 of 10
5. Question
1 pointsConsider the following statements about Volatile organic compounds (VOCs):
-
- All VOCs are harmful to human health.
- VOCs are primarily found in industrial settings and not in everyday products.
- Reducing VOC emissions contributes to improved air quality and decreased risk of respiratory problems.
How many of the above statements are correct?
Correct
Ans: (a)
Explanation:
- Statement 1: This is false. While some VOCs, like benzene and formaldehyde, are known carcinogens or cause other health issues, many VOCs are relatively harmless at low levels of exposure. Examples include terpenes found in citrus fruits and limonene in cleaning products.
- Statement 2: This is false. Many everyday products like paints, varnishes, air fresheners, perfumes, and even fruits and vegetables emit VOCs.
- Statement 3: This is true. Reducing VOC emissions through proper ventilation, choosing low-VOC products, and avoiding unnecessary use of chemical-based cleaners can significantly improve indoor air quality, reduce ozone formation outdoors, and lower the risk of respiratory problems like asthma and allergies.
