Context: Jayanti Buruda, a tribal woman from Malkangiri district in Odisha, became the first tribal woman reporter at Kalinga TV in 2015.
However, unhappy with mainstream news coverage, she founded Bada Didi Union in 2018 to address issues like girls’ education and reproductive health in tribal communities.
In 2022, she launched Jungle Rani, a social media news platform managed by 50 tribal women, empowering them to share stories through mobile journalism. The platform focuses on topics such as tribal life, culture, and awareness of the Forest Rights Act, showcasing the perspectives of the tribal community. Buruda aims to expand Jungle Rani to other tribal-dominated districts in Odisha.
