Context: A new COVID-19 subvariant, JN.1, identified in in Kerala, has raised concerns, prompting the Union Ministry of Health to initiate preparedness measures.

  • The variant, considered to be Omicron subvariant BA.2.86 or Pirola, has been spreading in several countries, including China.
  • The JN.1 variant is noted for its ability to spread faster and evade immunity.
  • Symptoms include fever, runny nose, sore throat, headache, and mild gastrointestinal symptoms.
