Context: The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) assembly for the 2024–25 biennium, India was re-elected to the IMO Council with the highest vote tally.
- India falls under the Category of 10 states with the largest interest in international seaborne trade, alongside countries like Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates.
- The IMO Council, which India has been re-elected to, serves as the executive organ of the organization and is responsible for supervising its work.
Under the Maritime India Vision 2030 (MIV 2030), India aims to enhance its representation at the IMO by appointing permanent representatives and nominating candidates for the Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Program.
