Question 4 of 10
4. Question
1 pointsConsider the following statements.
-
- Normally, cyclones weaken upon entering land.
- When cyclones come under the influence of western disturbances, it can retain its intensity even after entering land.
- The Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea generate around one-fourth of the world’s cyclones.
How many of the above statements are correct?
Correct
Ans: (b)
Explanation
- Most cyclones are forced to weaken post landfall as they detach from the sea.
- Cyclones are formed between the tropics while western disturbances are formed in the mid-latitudes. When the two interact, they influence each other. When cyclones come under the influence of western disturbances, it can retain its intensity even after entering land.
- Cyclone Tauktae in 2021 came under the influence of western disturbances, it slowed down as it was crossing over to land. This slow progress over the coast ensured that the cyclone continued to get sufficient moisture supply from the sea. Hence it did not weaken, but rather retained its intensity even 24 hours after coming over land.
- The Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea generate only 7 per cent of the world’s cyclones. However, their impact are huge as some of the most densely populated regions of the world, including some mega-cities, are susceptible.

Question 5 of 10
5. Question
1 pointsConsider the following statements regarding the role played by tropical cyclones on regional and global climate.
-
- They can often bring intense rainfall to drought prone regions.
- They carry heat energy away from the tropics and transport it toward temperate latitudes.
- They also act as the earth’s filter system by cleansing the air of toxins and pollutants out of the atmosphere.
How many of the above statements are correct?
Correct
Ans: (c)
Explanation
- Tropical cyclones can relieve drought conditions as they often carry moisture laden winds.
- In addition to strong winds and rain, tropical cyclones are capable of generating high waves, damaging storm surge, and tornadoes.
- They typically weaken rapidly over and where they are cut off from their primary energy source. For this reason, coastal regions are particularly vulnerable to damage from a tropical cyclone as compared to inland regions.
- Heavy rains however, can cause significant flooding inland, and storm surges can produce extensive coastal flooding up to 25 miles from the coastline.
- They also carry heat energy away from the tropics and transport it toward temperate latitudes, because they are large wind systems that absorb the frontal conditions of the area they flow in.
- Finally, due to the high speed they blow in, they also act as the earth’s filter system by cleansing the air of toxins and pollutants out of the atmosphere.
