Who was Chanda Sahib?
Chanda Sahib (died 1752) was a subject of the Mughal Empire and the Nawab of the Carnatic between 1749 and 1752. Initially, he was supported by the French during the 2nd Carnatic Wars. After his defeat at Arcot in 1751, he was captured by the Marathas of Thanjavur and executed.
What is the Second Carnatic War (1749-1754)?
It conflict arose from a succession dispute in the south after the death of the Nizam of Hyderabad.
Chanda Sahib, backed by the French, besieged Tiruchirappalli but faced defeat at the hands of English forces. His son was defeated and killed at Arcot, leading to Chanda Sahib’s capture by the Marathas and subsequent beheading. Muhammed Ali was installed as the Nawab of Arcot by the English in 1754. The Treaty of Pondicherry led to the cessation of the conflict.
