Cracking the UPSC Civil Services Personality Test- A Session by Vinay Sir | November 7th at 11 AM in Bengaluru

Dear Student,

As you embark on potentially the last phase (we hope for and wish you the best) of your UPSC Civil Services Examination journey, there’s a crucial component that awaits you, a defining moment that can shape your destiny—the UPSC CSE Personality Test. This stage is where your knowledge meets personality, where your dreams meet reality.

Taking this exam is akin to entering a maze consisting of 3 stages (Prelims, Mains, Interview). Finding your way out of this maze may be a tough task- one that requires a precise roadmap and strategy suitable to you, which would empower you to navigate the vast syllabus, ‘n’ number of questions and subjects with relative ease. We understand how agonizing the wait for Mains results can be, but this time is not to wasted!  Now is the time to prepare, to embrace the challenge, and  to exit the maze with a top rank.

You’ve already traversed through countless pages of books and notes, through late-night study sessions and sacrifices. You’ve weathered the storm of prelims and climbed the lofty mountains of the mains. And now, the final leg of your odyssey beckons. The UPSC Interview, worth a significant 275 marks, is the maze’s exit gate—it’s where you can add the finishing touch to your success.

Here’s the  truth: you’ve come this far, and the finish line is closer than ever. The interview isn’t just a test of your knowledge; it’s a test of your character, your composure, and your conviction. It’s a conversation, not an interrogation. It’s where the real you shines through, where your aspirations, values, and motivations become your voice.

In this maze, there are a few pointers to keep in mind, as per the UPSC CSE Notification:

  1. The candidate will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of the candidate’s career. The candidate will be asked questions on matters of general interest. The object of the Interview/Personality Test is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers. The Interview/Personality Test is intended to judge the mental calibre of a candidate. In broad terms this is really an assessment of not only intellectual qualities but also social traits and interest in current affairs. Some of the qualities to be judged are mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgement, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, intellectual and moral integrity.

  1. The technique of the Interview/Personality Test is not that of a strict cross-examination but of a natural, though directed and purposive conversation which is intended to reveal the mental qualities of the candidate.

  1. The Interview/Personality Test is not intended to be a test either of the specialized or general knowledge of the candidates which has been already tested through their written papers. Candidates are expected to have taken an intelligent interest not only in their special subjects of academic study but also in the events which are happening around them both within and outside their own State or Country as well as in modern currents of thought and in new discoveries which should rouse the curiosity of well-educated youth.
