Question 2 of 5
2. Question
In addition to its present role of representation and accountability, the Rajya Sabha could be the House that represents difference in our polity, difference marked not merely by its culture but its diversity. Difference in India is encoded not merely around regions, languages, and communities but also in its inegalitarian social relations. Representation through federal units hardly captures these multiple and often overlapping differences. There are some constituencies which will never be able to ensure their adequate representation through the electoral route: Muslims; women; linguistic, religious and ethnic diversity; regions such as the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir; urban informal labour; the rural poor, just to name a few constituencies. The Constituent Assembly debates, and the need for the Upper House to be embedded, are a sufficient justification in this regard. One can understand the deep discomfiture that some of the nominated members feel in the House given the adversarial context in which they have to function. There are probably ways to shape representation that reaches out and connects to nodal concerns without being overwhelming.
What is the essential message being conveyed in the passage?
Correct
Correct Answer : B
Answer Justification :
Explanation:
Statement a is the underlying basis for statement b. However, the passage focuses on how we can make Rajya Sabha more representative in terms of capturing the diversity in India. Hence b.
Statement c is wrong as the passage talks about nominated members feeling discomfited sometimes which doesn’t necessarily mean that nominated members have no place in Rajya Sabha.

Question 4 of 5
4. Question

Question 5 of 5
5. Question
In America, failure is often seen as a natural stepping stone on the road to success. People may go to school to study one thing, take a job doing another, and then move around between companies and industries throughout their careers. The U.S. seems to celebrate comebacks as much as initial success. That’s not how I experienced failure growing up in India. In India, failure is frowned upon in every instance. When I failed a few times in my early education, the sense I got – and had to fight against – was that failure was the end of the road, not a bump in the road. This tendency has no doubt led to the demise of many promising careers for countless entrepreneurs – and perhaps stopped many from even daring to try in the first place.
According to the passage, what is the difference in understanding failure between Indians and Americans?
Correct
Correct Answer : B
Answer Justification :
Explanation:
It is explicitly mentioned in the passage.
