Question 1 of 5
1. Question
According to Tagore, we need to free ourselves from what shackles the self, not from the self itself. We can do this by focusing on the infinite instead of on the finite, but have to do this through our individuality.
To find fulfillment and to liberate ourselves truly it is hence necessary to reach unity, advaitam, with the infinite through our individual self. We have to actualize the famous words tat tvam asi (Thou art that) through our personal self, by dedicating it instead of negating it. What we need to do to find fulfilling freedom is therefore to recognize brahman and express this vision, to formulate higher ideals and act according to them, and to connect with the world emotionally and spiritually. This means, that the goal of freedom can be achieved by the expression of the human surplus.
Tagore illustrates this through the image of an oil lamp – If a lamp hoards its oil it cannot fulfill its purpose; it is separated from everything and does not find its meaning. It needs to give up its oil and sacrifice it, yet it should not do so in a purposeless way, as this would lead to even darker poverty. Instead, when the lamp is lighted, it should find its meaning by establishing a relation with the world. The sacrifice of its oil is therefore its fulfillment.
Which of the following is the central theme of the passage?
Correct

Question 3 of 5
3. Question
The drug trafficking scenario in India is largely attributed to various external and internal factors. One of the prime external factors happens to be India’s close proximity to the major opium producing regions of South West and South East Asia known as the ‘Golden Crescent’ and the ‘Golden Triangle’, respectively. The geographical location of India as such, makes it vulnerable to transit, trafficking and consumption of Opium derivatives in various forms along the known trafficking routes. The major internal factors responsible are illicit cultivation of Poppy and the diversion from the licit Opium sources into illicit production in interior areas.
Which of the following, according to the passage, is/are reasons for the drug trafficking scenario in India?

- Lack of capacity of drug enforcement agencies
- India’s geographical location
- Licit cultivation of poppy

Question 4 of 5
4. Question
There has been a significant trend worldwide towards regionalism in government, resulting in a widespread transfer of powers downwards towards regions and communities since 1990s. This process, which involves the creation of new political entities and bodies at a sub-national level and an increase in their content and powers, is known as devolution. Devolution has been characterized as being made up of three factors—political legitimacy, decentralization of authority and decentralization of resources. Political legitimacy here means a mass demand from below for the decentralization process, which is able to create a political force for it to take place. In many cases, decentralization is initiated by the upper tier of government without sufficient political mobilization for it at the grassroots level, and in such cases the decentralization process often does not fulfil its objectives.
Which among the following is the most logical, rational and critical inference that can be made from the above passage?
Correct
Answer: C. The passage states that the devolution of power gains legitimacy when there is a demand for it from lower level. It is important to have free expression of the will of the people as the passage states that people at the lower level should be able to create a political force for it which would require active participation at the grassroot level. Hence C.

Question 5 of 5
5. Question
India accounts for nearly a fifth of the world’s child deaths. In terms of numbers, it is the highest in the world – nearly 16 lakhs every year. Of these, more than half die in the first month of life. Officials believe that the reason for this is the absence of steps to propagate basic health practices relating to breast feeding and immunization. Also the large reproductive population of 2.6 crore remains bereft of care during the critical phases of pregnancy and post-delivery. Added to this is the prevalence of child marriages, anaemia among young women and lack of focus on adolescent sanitation, all of which impact child death rates.
Which is the most critical and rational inference that can be made from the above passage?
Correct
Answer: C. The focus of the passage is on bringing out the huge instances of child deaths in India as a result of lack of basic health care and other health management related issues. Thus C captures the inference from the passage most aptly as it mentions that Universalization and integration of maternal health and child health services can effectively address the problem. Hence C.
