 Context: Assembly theory is a new idea in physics that aims to explain the complexity of living things.

 

Explanation:

As objects become more complex, they require more local memory to store information about how to assemble their unique parts. This theory treats the shortest path to build an object from its elementary building blocks, called the assembly index, as an intrinsic property of the object. E.g., This approach has been used to show that molecules with an assembly index above 15 steps are only found in living samples.

 

Usage: By estimating the point at which molecules in a chemical soup become so complex that they start using the information to make copies of themselves, the theory may help us understand when and how life arose from non-life.

 

Significance: Assembly theory is a promising new idea that could help us better understand the complexity of life and the role of memory and information flow in the universe.
