1. What is depopulation? What are the reasons for declining fertility rates in the country? How can depopulation impact the country?  (250 words)

Two weeks ago, when the world population touched 8 billion, several headlines focused on how India was the largest contributor to the last billion and is set to surpass China as the world’s most populous nation by 2023. China’s population has begun to decline, while India’s population is expected to grow for another 40 years, they said. But missing in this conversation is the real threat of depopulation that parts of India too face, and the country’s complete lack of preparedness to deal with it.

Key Demand of the question:

To write about depopulation, causes of falling TFR and the challenges it poses.

Structure of the answer:

Introduction: 

Begin by defining depopulation.

Body:

First, write about the factors that have contributed to declining TFR are: Higher education, increased mobility, late marriage, financial independence among women and overall prosperity.

Next, possible challenges that the falling TFR may lead to and how they could be overcome.

2. Discuss as to how the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impact the climate phenomena that alter atmospheric circulation across the globe. (250 words)

The La Niña weather phenomenon, which entered its third year in September this year, is unlikely to continue through 2023, forecasts suggest. Instead, there is a likelihood of a neutral or El Niño phase emerging next year, according to forecasts from the Columbia Climate School Research Institute for Climate and Society.

To write about El-Nino mechanism and also write in detail about its effects on the world climate and geography.

Tea Board officials admitted that Indian tea had not been able to establish itself globally, and that one of its key brands, Darjeeling Tea, was under acute stress.

4. Disguised unemployment exists frequently in developing countries whose large populations create a surplus in the labour force. It can lead to decline in overall productivity without any substantial increase in the output. Elaborate. (250 words)

Directive word: 

Elaborate – Give a detailed account as to how and why it occurred, or what is the context. You must be defining key terms wherever appropriate and substantiate with relevant associated facts.

Begin by defining disguised unemployment. Give an example to substantiate.

Body:

First, mention the impact of disguised unemployment on the Indian economy –does not affect aggregate economic output, productivity is low and too many workers are filling too few jobs etc.

Next, suggest measures to overcome disguised unemployment – creating additional employment with proper wages, security of tenure and social protection, upskilling and reskilling of labor force etc.

7. Rawls theory has given its great contribution towards bringing in the true meaning and importance of liberty in the limelight. Critically analyse. (150 words)

Directive word: 

Critically analyze – When asked to analyse, you must examine methodically the structure or nature of the topic by separating it into component parts and present them in a summary. When ‘critically’ is suffixed or prefixed to a directive, one needs to look at the good and bad of the topic and give a balanced judgment on the topic.

Structure of the answer:             

Introduction:

Start by describing the Rawl’s theory of justice.

Body:

Elaborate on Rawls developed a theory of justice based on social contract theory, holding that the natural state of human beings is freedom, not subjugation to a monarch, no matter how benign or well intentioned. Rawls’s theory views human beings as inherently good and, echoing Kant, inclined toward moral rectitude and action.

Next, write a critique that Rawls’s theory focuses primarily on the issue of distribution, because decisions made in ignorance can neither reward innovation and enterprise nor encourage risk.
