Case Study 20M
Q2. Sunil works in a multinational company that deals with the manufacturing of hydraulic pumps. The company has started operations in India, with an Indian partner. As part of the technology transfer, Sunil is required to visit the Indian plant and provide adequate training to the Indian technicians.
Sunil is sincere in his job and he has trained all the technicians in the technical aspects of manufacturing hydraulic pumps. Sunil also notices that the safety procedures that the Indian subsidiary is following are far below the safety standard abroad. The pressurized gases which are required for the manufacturing are stored in containers that are made from lower grade materials than it is abroad. This could be a cause for disaster. Sunil informs the Indian subsidiary about the same but the Indian subsidiary is more interested in cost-cutting and improving profits than the safety standards. Sunil reports the same to the headquarters of the company, but the foreign branch isn’t concerned about safety, as the Indian subsidiary is responsible for the safety issues. This is true for many multinational companies, in 2020 there was a toxic gas leak in the Vizag plant of an MNC, action was taken only on the Indian subsidiary. Multinational companies usually are above sanctions from the Indian government for any safety hazards.
