Q4. The primary objective of imposing sanctions is to deter bad behaviour, enforcing economic punishment on the targeted country, and to force rehabilitation, or changed behaviour by that country. Sanctions provide a visible and less expensive alternative to military intervention. But they have many adverse effects, they impact innocent civilians and, at worst, can kill more people than the wars they are purported to supplant. Sanctions on Iran led its healthcare system buckle under the most brutal waves of COVID-19 infections.
Economic sanctions imposed against Russia for invading Ukraine are the most comprehensive and coordinated actions taken against a major power since World War II. As the economic battle mounts, India has taken advantage of discounted prices to ramp up oil imports from Russia at a time when global energy prices have been rising. Although the price is attractive, India’s big refining companies are facing a challenge trying to finance these purchases, because of sanctions on Russian banks. It’s a problem facing trade in both directions. One of the options India is looking at is a transaction system based on local currencies, where Indian exporters to Russia get paid in roubles instead of dollars or euros. The US has made clear its reservations with this, saying it could “prop up the rouble or undermine the dollar-based financial system”. America is increasingly using sanctions as a geopolitical tool against its rivals, Russia, Iran and Venezuela. These countries are important partners for India.
