Question 1 of 5
1. Question
A boat sails down the river 10 km and then up the river for 6 km. The speed of the river flow is 1 km/h. What should be the minimum speed of the boat for the trip to take a maximum of 4 hours?
Correct
Ans. (D)
D1/(SB+SS) +[D2/(SB-SS)] = 4 hour
10/(SB+1)]+[6/(SB-1)]=4 hour………………………….(1)
Going by option and (1) we get
SB = 4km/hour
Incorrect
Ans. (D)
D1/(SB+SS) +[D2/(SB-SS)] = 4 hour
10/(SB+1)]+[6/(SB-1)]=4 hour………………………….(1)
Going by option and (1) we get
SB = 4km/hour

Question 2 of 5
2. Question
Two trains are running on parallel lines in the same direction at speeds of 40 kmph and 20 kmph respectively. The faster train crosses a man in the second train in 36 seconds. The length of the faster train is
Correct
Ans: (a)
T = time required
LT+LO/(ST-SO)……………………………….(1)
ST-SO=40-20=20km/h
=20(5/18)=(50/9)m/s
Now t = (LT/50)/9 Þ36 = (LT/50)/9
So, LT = 200m

Question 3 of 5
3. Question
The speed of the boat in still water is 12 km/h and the speed of the stream is 2 km/h. A distance of 8 km, going upstream, is covered in
Correct
Ans. (d)
T = D/(SB-SS)(upstream)
=8/(12-2)=8/10=(8/10 )60 = 48 min
Incorrect
Ans. (d)
T = D/(SB-SS)(upstream)
=8/(12-2)=8/10=(8/10 )60 = 48 min

Question 4 of 5
4. Question
A boat goes 15 km upstream in 80 minutes. The speed of the stream is 5 km/h. The speed of the boat in still water is
Correct
Ans. (B)
t = D /(SB-SS)(upstream)
80/60 = 15/(SB-5) Þ4/3 = 15/(SB-5)
SB = 16.25 km/h
Incorrect
Ans. (B)
t = D /(SB-SS)(upstream)
80/60 = 15/(SB-5) Þ4/3 = 15/(SB-5)
SB = 16.25 km/h

Question 5 of 5
5. Question
Two trains are travelling in the same direction at 50 km/h and 30 km/h respectively. The faster train crosses a man in the slower train in 18 seconds. Find the length of the faster train.
Correct
Ans: (a)
T = (LT+LO)/(ST-SO)
50-30 = 20km/hr=50/9 m/s
Now 18 = LT/(50/9)ÞLT = 100 m
Incorrect
Ans: (a)
T = (LT+LO)/(ST-SO)
50-30 = 20km/hr=50/9 m/s
Now 18 = LT/(50/9)ÞLT = 100 m
