Day – 17
CASE STUDIES:
- Politics with principles is a core philosophy on which you have tried to build your political career. You entered the politics to be able to serve the public to the best of your abilities. In this pursuit, you have been able to initiate various activities which have helped the needy in your society.
One of the activities that you have planned for your society is to construct a hospital that can be accessed by everyone in the society. You have petitioned the government and various noted members of the society to collect the requisite donation that is required to build a hospital. You have been able to collect substantial amount which would help you in your endeavor.
Various noted members in the society that you had petitioned have donated money to this venture. Though the government has shown its inclination in setting up a hospital and is receptive to your requests. Help from the government has not been forthcoming in a timely manner.
You initiated a programme where even the general public could donate money to this venture. You have setup the requisite facilities to ensure there is transparency and also to ensure there is no foul play in the use of the money collected.
One day, you received a phone call from a person who has amassed considerable amount of wealth in the society. However, this person has also gained a reputation of amassing his wealth through unfair and illegal means. Though no conviction has been achieved in spite of many cases against him. You had consciously not sent a request to him knowing the cases against him.
The money that he is willing to donate is substantial and would help you greatly in building the hospital. However, he has put a condition that he would donate the amount provided he is allowed to associate himself with the platform in a more active manner.
You fear that accepting money from him would tarnish the cause that you are championing for. You also fear that the help from the government may not come in due time to help you in your pursuit and the money raised from the general public may still fall significantly short. Any further delay in realizing your programme would result in continued hardships for access to quality healthcare for the poor ones in the society.
In this context, answer the following questions:
- Identify the ethical issues for you in this situation.
- Enumerate the options that are available to you. Examine their pros and cons carefully
- What course of action will you choose in this situation? Justify the reason for your action
