CASE STUDIES:

  1. You have built your political career by staying true to your ideals and thoughts; and that has won the admiration of not just the general public but also that of your political party. Seeing your dedication and the admiration that the public has for you; your leaders have decided to field you as a candidate in the upcoming elections.

Throughout your brief political career you have maintained a steadfast stand on various crucial issues. Such as- death penalty, greater reproductive rights for women, role of Hindi in national unification etc

You have been asked to contest the election from a constituency which is considered as consisting of fairly conservative electorate. When an independent survey was conducted in the constituency, you found out that a significant portion of the electorate did not support your views on greater reproductive rights for women. Your stand on this issue resulted in a significant portion of the electorate preferring your opponent who harbors the conservative views.

However, in the same survey you found out that a reasonable number of the electorate who are mostly young women supported your stand on greater reproductive rights for women. When you approached the leaders of your party to seek their guidance on the issue, they advised you to change your stance for the time being on the issue so that you could win the election. They emphasized you to see the larger picture of a young youth being elected to the Parliament.

In this context, answer the following questions:

  1. Identify the ethical dilemmas for you in the present case.
  2. Debate the options available to you by examining their pros and cons carefully.
  3. What course of action will you take in this situation? Justify the reasons for your action.

2. You are appointed as a member of a team in an IT company. Since your appointment you have been working hard. You have also received wide appreciation for your work. Much of your success is owed to your boss who has been forthcoming in extending his help to you.

Another person was appointed as a member of your team when you were appointed as well. This team member has also been working hard. However, this individual has not received the appreciation that you have received in spite of a much better work done by him compared to you. Your boss has been constantly finding faults with his work. One day you find out that the reason for your boss’ attitude towards the said colleague is because he graduated from a college from where your boss was denied admission since he did not possess the requisite marks.

The constant criticism of your boss to this colleague is hampering his confidence and causing unnecessary anxiety in him. His relationship with others in the office is also being affected because of this. His anxiety has also started hampering his work off late.

You also find out that your boss is actively trying to find a major reason to fire this employee. You are greatly troubled by this situation. Though you want to take a concrete action against your boss’s unfair behavior towards your colleague; you are worried that any such step will hamper your career.

In this context, answer the following questions:

  1. Enumerate the options available to you. Examine their pros and cons carefully.
  2. What course of action will you take in this situation? Justify the reasons for your action
  3. Illustrate by giving three examples on how leaders during freedom struggle dealt with conflict between attitude and behavior at a personal level.
