Day – 6
Print media is on a decline in the recent times due to boom of the internet which is fast replacing print media. Every print media is trying to catch up to this new phenomenon. You were recently appointed as a journalist in one of the most prestigious print media in the country. Though your company has been working since many decades, its profitability has decreased in recent past. Even though your print media has tried to carve an online presence; it has not met with adequate success. One of the primary reasons for this is because your company has tried to stay away from sensational issues and publishing reports on these issues in a manner which does not add any real value to journalistic ethics
While covering an issue which has captured the attention of the whole country, you come across information that could help your company to get a stronger foothold in the online market. However, this piece of information is unsubstantiated and unverified. Delay in publishing the news would give your competitors the edge over you. If published and it turns out false, it could damage the reputation of the company. If published and it turns out to be true, it will greatly help your company financially. When you bring this to the notice of your editor, he has given you the final decision making power to either publish or not.
a) Identify the values that you think are sacrosanct in the field of journalism
b) What course of action will you take in this scenario? Give reasons for the same.
