Smt. Omita Paul Appointed Secretary to the President

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointments of Smt. Omita Paul, IIS (73) (Retired) as Secretary to the President on re-employment on contract basis, in the rank and pay of Secretary. Her tenure would be on co-terminus basis with the tenure of the President of India with effect from the date of joining as Secretary to the President or till she ceases to function as Secretary to the President or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

She is the wife of KK Paul, former Delhi Police commissioner who joined the UPSC in 2007 (he will retire in February 2013).

She began career as a lecturer at Chandigarh’s Government Home Science College in 1969. Joined the IIS in 1973 and served in PIB, DD & AIR.

First worked with Pranab Mukherjee when he was minister of commerce, steel and mines in 1980. Worked in senior roles in ministries of finance, commerce, external affairs & defence.

She is counted as powerful bureaucrat in the country despite not being an IAS officer.
