ANTHROPOLOGY STRATEGY: Chetan T.S. Rank – 193, Marks – 263, CSE – 2015

Few Words About InsightsOnIndia:

Myself Chetan T.S., AIR 193, CSE 2015. I thank Kiran S, my roommate. Insights on India has created much needed ecosystem for civil service preparation in Bengaluru. I took last comprehensive offline tests at Insights which is conducted just a few days before CSE Main exam. I found it helpful as it was just like a simulation writing Two papers on same day as we do in main exam.

I thank team Insights for creating such an ecosystem for aspirants in Bengaluru.

My Anthropology STrategy

AIR- 193, CSE2015

  • CSE 2015 score 263 (124+139).
  • CSE 2014 score 259 (126+133).

Answering :

  • There is no trick. Even if there is one, then it is Read, Re-read, Revise and keep thinking and interlinking syllabus. Adding contemporary debates/issues.
  • One has to Mug up many definitions and practice diagrams.
  • Use simple language for explanation.
  • One should be able to adapt to the requirements of questions in examination hall. At the same time be ARGUMENTATIVE in answering, use facts, examples, case studies, and always take a stand in the end. It should be HOLISTIC BALANCED reflecting the Anthropological view.
  • Keep checking EPW, DTE they contain well researched articles at times which can be used in answers. Do write reference while writing.
  • Make flow charts if required but do not overdo it.

Paper 1:

  • Study the entire syllabus.
  • Anthropological thoughts are very important section.
  • Avoid Social and Cultural Questions from answering if you have a better choice.

Books/Material I referred:

  1. Mr. Muniratnam Reddy notes along with sosin, vaid, braintree what is available online already.
  2. Ember and ember for reference.
  3. Upadyay pandey for thoughts (the book has good case studies).
  4. Social part – dn majumdar and madan ; also book by vaid sir; also have gone through ignou sociology for examples (not in detail).
  5. Physical anthropology – P.Nath , braintree notes. (do keep track on any finding of new discoveries/debates ).

Paper 2:

Answer to the demand of question. Be ARGUMENTATIVE, USE FACTS, FIGURES,CASE STUDIES. I always prefer examples from India as it will be useful for Interview as well. You should put your personality stamp while writing couple of answers. Then you will definitely cross above average. But, yes, it must be HOLISTIC, BALANCED.

Solve previous years question paper.

Books/Material I referred:

  1. Mr. Muniratnam Reddy notes along with sosin, vaid, braintree what is available online already.
  2. Indian Anthropology – Nadeem Hasnain. (Selective reading).
  3. LP Vidyarthi – Tribal Culture of India.( Selective reading )
  4. Selective reading from material -national science digital library.(available online)
  5. PIB – issues related to tribals development . Priority MoTA .
  6. Tribal india- Nadeem Hasnain.
  7. Yearly report by MoTA available on website.
  8. Complete XAXA Committee – HLC on Socio-economic, health and educational status of Tribes in India.
  9. Selective reading 2nd ARC report, report by erstwhile NAC, the Adivasi Question.
  10. Keep checking EPW, DTE and THE HINDU.

I have extensively used GOOGLE and YOUTUBE.

  • Selecting case studies, examples etc:

They are everywhere – in newspapers, magazines, monthly current affairs materials, Committee reports setup on specific issues,- only thing is an aspirant has recognise it. For that one should always have SYLLABUS in mind while reading.

A kagga by D.V. Gundappa (DVG), Kannada Poet:

English :

Our experiences, feelings and merits are like paddy (with husk). One must beat with examination and arguments. Only then one will get conviction on his own philosophy. Only such a theory can be called as well-thought one. That will be the food for thought every day. – Mankuthimma

  • Keratam Ala

    Very thankful to u G

  • big [email protected]

SIR DO U HAVE JOIN ANT TEST SERIES ….

  • Priyanka

This phrase ‘Selective reading’ bothers me a lot… What does it really mean? or how to decide it?(what to read selectively n how). If anybody knows plz share…

    • Pramod Reddy

go through the syllabus, question papers and standard books for those topics mentioned in the syllabus and analyze them….then you will know what is necessary, unnecessary, relevant and irrelavant material written in books w.r.t the syllabus…read between the lines, understand the essence of the topic and its relation with other topics as well which you will be able to do only after atleast 2 readings.

      • Priyanka

Thank you Pramod! What is your optional?

        • Pramod Reddy

          welcome priyanka…it’s anthro

          • Priyanka

Wow good! Have you given any attempt before? and have you joined any coaching for it?

            • Pramod Reddy

yes but didn’t make it to mains n i have taken classes at lakshmaiah sir in hyderabad…he taught good. But the prob with anthro is no proper availability of solid sources. So make your own notes apart from class notes.

              • Priyanka

                yes, you are right…

                • Pramod Reddy

are u from delhi?? did u take any coaching?

                  • Priyanka

I am from Pune.. this is my first attempt n preparing without any coaching… just with the help of some online material… but now thinking to join some coaching for anthro.. do u have any idea which is best coaching for it? I also want to know if any good test series is there…

                    • Pramod Reddy
                    • Ocean_wave

can you tell me which coaching provide anthro classes in new delhi and how much do they charge ?

                    • Pramod Reddy

i heard srinivas sir is good for physical part n sosin mam teaches social and tribal part good enough…

                    • Ocean_wave

where do they teach? i mean which coaching institute? i need coaching in delhi region only.

                    • Priyanka

Is it necessary to join coaching? What abt Test series?

                    • Pramod Reddy

not actually if u can understand….see the qs how they were asked and refer to basic standard books. prepare your own notes from them on each topic from various angles….go through toppers’ notes…u’ll understand how to prepare notes and u may need test series to how u answer n how much u can improve

                    • Priyanka

Do u knw any good test series? is it good to join at center or postal test series are also beneficial?

                    • Pramod Reddy

lakshamaiah sir’s n sosin mam’s test series are good in hyd and i don’t know abt delhi..even i’m looking for good test series in delhi but sosin mam teaches in delhi as well..dnt know abt postal series but i think it’ll be beneficial if u can get ur answers checked personally

                    • Priyanka

                      yes, even I think so…

                    • Rimi cse

These test series are available in online?

                    • Pramod Reddy

lakshmaiah sir provides online classes but dnt know abt online test series….search on google for their contact nums…

                    • Rimi cse

Online class free or pay, if u have any idea plz do share here, once again thank u

                    • Pramod Reddy

                    • Priyanka

                      hey,hi… how r u doing?
do u hav MK Pande in soft copy?

                    • Pramod Reddy

i don’t even know that book….what is it for?

                    • Priyanka

hi… it is for CSAT paper 2 … it covers comprehension I guess… I also don’t have dat much details… I thought u r in delhi so might be aware of it…
anyways how you ppl are preparing for CSAT 2?

                    • Pramod Reddy

hello priyanka…csat paper is just a qualifying paper now so we don’t need to prepare much…basic maths n reasoning would do and for passages part search for comprehensive passages for practice for gre online and practice them

                    • Priyanka

okay… but will it really suffice?

                    • Pramod Reddy

more than enough because even if u attempt 40% paper correctly, that would be sufficient to qualify and doing that is very easy

                    • Priyanka

                      🙂

              • Ocean_wave

hey.. hows lakshmaiah sir’s notes ?? someone told me they are good.

              • Ocean_wave

hey pramod ..do u have any background related to anthro ? or u just chosen it out f interest ?

                • Pramod Reddy

                  i’m from b.tech stream n it’s interest

      • Rimi cse

Hi, m doing self study , do u think with the self study is it possible? And from news paper , magazine what to cover in the point of view of anthropology?

        • Pramod Reddy

yes it is. today there is one more article on anthro from insights. that guy shared his notes. Go through it u’ll get some clarity n for some topics his notes is more than enough. and from news…all schemes n policies which will have an effect on villages n tribes, any issues n articles like climate change n agriculture, water, farmer suicides, etc and from physical point of view, there is a lot of research going on genetics so if some article appears in news paper see whether it is related to syllabus n note down points and also you can go through a beautiful article on anthro on mrunal by a doctor ( i couldn’t recollect his name) n who got into service…search on mrunal

          • Rimi cse

Thank u…so kind of u…one more douts is that for paper 2 in anthropology many questions are coming from out of syllabus , how to deal with them,

            • Pramod Reddy

no prob…and they are not out of syllabus…3yrs back they used to ask directly on the topics but now they were asking the qs linking basic concepts n current affairs which u can answer properly only when u have proper understanding…. so read basic books n be alert while u read paper n yojana…

              • Rimi cse

M planing for 2017 to give exam, I can cover only from today current affairs to upto mains exam, if they ask questions from last to last current affairs then how to handle this?

                • Pramod Reddy

dnt worry upsc knows that too…so they will be asking from past one yr from the date of exam and yes there is a lot of research on genetics but results are not upto the mark…even if they are it is irrelevant to our anthro civils part bcoz what we have is only basics n on fossils part syllabus is crystal clear they won’t go beyond that n i think researchers find fossils once in 50-100 yrs…so don’t worry….first be clear with syllabus…take it out and previous papers too…note down qs topic wise n paper wise…see how they asked qs related to topics mentioned in the syllabus and then see standard books what is the topic about and what it conveys to us….p.nath for physical part is good but it’ll scare u when u see it for the first time but it has lot of irrelevant material which is useful for zoology or biotech students…so go through toppers’ notes as well to know how much to study on that particular topic

                  • Rimi cse

                    Thank u

                    • Pramod Reddy

                      cheer up 🙂

buddy how can he tell u whether its necessary or not… u should know this better if u need coaching or not. it depends.. first try to read and understand on ur own…if u are able to grasp things..fine and if facing difficulty even in understanding issues and concepts..then think about coaching..u have to decide it on ur own..without reading everything will seem difficult..
