Relationship with other disciplines

  • Anthropology is the study of humans, past and present. To understand the full sweep and complexity of cultures across all of human history, anthropology draws and builds upon knowledge from the social and biological sciences as well as the humanities and physical sciences.

.Psychology is an academic and applied discipline that involves the scientific study of mental functions and behaviors.

A central concern of anthropologists is the application of knowledge to the solution of human problems. Historically, anthropologists in the United States have been trained in one of four areas: sociocultural anthropology, biological/physical anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics.

Psychology has the immediate goal of understanding individuals and groups by both establishing general principles and researching specific cases, and by many accounts it ultimately aims to benefit society.

Anthropologists often integrate the perspectives of several of these areas into their research, teaching, and professional lives In this field, a professional practitioner or researcher is called a psychologist and can be classified as a social, behavioral, or cognitive scientist. Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behavior, while also exploring the physiological and biological processes that underlie cognitive functions and behaviors.

    • Language , Expression and presentation are clear to a large extent.

The comparision of anthropology vis-a-vis Pshology has been neatly covered whereas with respect to medicine , no adequate treatment is given.

I would like to rectify some lines written above , if it’s permissible .

Regarding the central concern of anthropologists : It is not solely the application of knowledge to solve human problems , on the other hand it is a holistic discipline which studies , understands and engages the human beings as a species , as a unit of a community and the mankind as a whole over a period of time . Such comparative and field studies give anthropologists an upper hand over psychologists who study human beings as individuals or systems with cognitive functions .

Coming to the statement ” Psychology has the immediate goal ,,,,,,,,, ” . Any human sciences or social sciences as a discipline never do have any immediate goals .

In any science or discipline or in the field of medicine the field of practitioners is entirely different from those of observers or researchers. Ofcourse they do interact and share their mutual findings , some of the practitioners may be part of field work but largely these are two different subsets.

Coming to the field of Medicine , it also studies the evolution of human being and the animal kingdom and their biological processes but it doesn’t assimilate the societal and cultural aspects .
The emphasis of Medicine is more on prevention ,curation or palliative care of human being(s) .In Anthropology focus is on much more wider arena like the political, social, economic linkages between individuals and communities along with the biological process which shape up the species called Homo Sapien sapien
